On-track Writing Guidance

These statements support teachers and leaders in judging/noticing how well children write in each year group; they should be used as part of ongoing professional dialogue in order to support assessment.




Assessing writing will always be tricky, especially when considering often intangible elements such as cohesion and flair.  This document gives you an overview of the expectations from the national curriculum for each year group, along with some common sense descriptions regarding how often or with what effect the children have mastered each element.  These statements only relate to the end of each year and should be used sensibly to give a broad view of what the children are aiming for in writing, rather than giving a definitive grade.
